(purely personal views, based on three decades of researching and writing on the Romanian Revolution of December 1989)

–Different professions deal in different types of currency, that is different types of credibility. For example, if you are a preacher or religious zealot and you preach about the virtues of monogamy and evils of pornography, adultery, etc….you definitely want to keep your house in order…i.e. not be caught with pornography or a prostitute, because to do so is to thoroughly discredit yourself.

So it is with those in academia and among the intelligentsia who preach the virtues of truth, honesty, trust, the open society, honorable values, etc.

So, for example, if you constantly invoke Hannah Arendt, or dissidents against repressive regimes, truth, honesty, tolerance, etc….you better be damned sure that your actions regarding things like that match your words.

This is the fundamental problem of Marius Stan. Stan plagiarized me in an interview on 7 December 2020 in the publication New Eastern Europe, https://neweasterneurope.eu/2020/12/07/the-revolution-of-1989-a-case-of-romanian-exceptionalism/. I showed the editor in chief Adam Reichart the two passages via email, and this was the step that Reichart took, to add the following disclaimer/caveat/clarification:

Not surprisingly, Stan does not include this in his rebuttal/defense, more than a month after the incident occurred. Below I will go through some of Stan’s self-defense of his actions and his effort to turn it into a matter of not what he did, but about who he claims I am. Stan’s defense is filled with alibis, half-truths, context-free presentation, and outright lies. A lot of it reminds me of the useful devices Michael Shafir has emphasized in categorizing denialist/negationist narratives: minimization, relativization, etc.

Stan begins his defense with a bombastic quote designed to knock the socks of his audience off…a Mark Twain quote, but of course the question is, does he deliver on it, and what does he deliver on it?

În realitate, nu voi face decât să urmez sfatul lui Mark Twain: “When in doubt tell the truth. It will confound your enemies and astound your friends.”

În legătură cu plagiatul pe care l-aș fi comis [l-as fi comis he says, in other words, he says the plagiarism that I would have committed, what a strange thing to say, I mean either you committed it, Marius, or you didn’t commit it?] într-un interviu luat mie anul trecut, voi spune exact ce s-a petrecut, cine este implicat și care sunt consecințele. Pe data de 18 septembrie 2020, o cercetătoare lituaniană m-a abordat cu rugămintea de a-i acorda un interviu pe mai multe teme. La momentul respectiv (de facto, perioada august-octombrie 2020), nu mai activam în cadrul UB, fiind detașat, conform legii, într-o altă instituție, pentru un alt proiect . I-am răspuns relativ repede, mai ales că eram presat de deadline-uri și de task-urile noului job (la acea dată) [He was very busy, responded quickly, pressed for deadlines, lost of tasks for his new job–ok he is setting up justification for negligence]. Din pricina agendei încărcate a cercetătoarei, interviul a apărut pe platforma New Eastern Europe abia pe 7 decembrie, când deja încetasem detașarea și mă întorsesem la UB pentru a-mi încheia, la termen, contractul pomenit anterior [He continues here for the second time to try to tell us that the interview was done when he was detached to another institute, not when he had any ties to the University of Bucharest] . Textul interviului pe care l-am acordat a fost postat în aceeași zi și pe pagina mea de FB: https://neweasterneurope.eu/…/the-revolution-of-1989-a…/ În aceeași zi, aproape concomitent cu postarea mea, un cercetător CNSAS pe nume Mihai Demetriade m-a abordat cu un fel de elan executoriu, spunându-mi că este prieten cu un anume Richard Hall și că acesta mă acuză că l-aș fi plagiat într-unul din răspunsurile pe care le-am oferit în interviu. Informația era reală, în subsolul articolului, acest Richard Hall, despre care a trebuit sa aflu mai multe, perora turbat cum Tismăneanu i-a distrus cariera [will he return to and investigate this allegation, no, of course not; Tismaneanu’s underhanded actions did not destroy my career, they cut off my public voice and my ability to publish and got me in terrible trouble, which is exactly what he wanted, for details see https://romanianrevolutionofdecember1989.wordpress.com/tismaneanu-report-2006-v-cia-nid-28-12-1989/ ] și cum eu nu fac decât să-i calc pe urme „mentorului”. A trebuit, cum era firesc, să iau în serios acuzația și să verific pasajele incriminate. Într-adevăr, există câteva similarități, pe care le voi explica în cele ce urmează, conform principiului lui Mark Twain: Am răspuns fiecărei întrebări din interviu de bona fide și am folosit, acolo unde subiectul/tema chestionat(ă) nu era o preocupare frecventă și implicit o hiperspecializare a mea, mai multe fișe de lectură și note luate în facultate, păstrate în fișiere, arhivate, cum face toată lumea. În urmă cu, iată, aproape două decenii, făcusem acele însemnări pe marginea unui alt subiect, în românește, pierzând originea sursei lor [here, he has the equivalent of what we say in the US is “the dog ate my homework”…he had notes but he lost the original source from which the notes were taken…oh such a tragedy…but Mr. Stan, did you try to find where those notes came from, whose work you were using? NO! Why not?]. Când am decis să-i invoc pe Linz și Stepan în explicația mea, n-am făcut-o pentru a-l văduvi pe R. Hall de vreo paternitate, ci pentru a demonstra a point in case, care era doar al meu [as I pointed out, it wasn’t just that he invoked Linz and Stepan, it was that he invoked it in almost exactly the same place in the flow of ideas that I did that he then presented as his own in the interview]. Evident, așa cum fac de fiecare dată atunci când am dubii în legătură cu originea unor fragmente, am introdus într-un soft anti-plagiat ceea ce devenise un răspuns informat din mai multe surse, din care textul a ieșit 100% clean [THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE CHERRY ON TOP…STAN TELLS US THAT WHENEVER HE HAS DOUBTS ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF CERTAIN PARTS OF HIS WORK, HE PUTS THEM THROUGH ANTI-PLAGIARISM SOFTWARE AND THE RESULT WAS 100 PERCENT CLEAN!!! MR. STAN, PEOPLE WHO DON’T PLAGIARIZE DON’T HAVE TO PUT THINGS THROUGH ANTI-PLAGIARISM SOFTWARE; MOREOVER, IF YOU HAD DOUBTS ABOUT WHERE THE TEXT ORIGINATED FROM IN YOUR NOTES, WHY DID YOU NOT DO A COMPUTER SEARCH ONLINE OR AMONG ACADEMIC ARTICLES WHERE YOU WOULD HAVE FOUND MY ORIGINAL 2000 EUROPE-ASIA STUDIES ARTICLE?] Recunosc, a fost o mare neglijență a mea, pe care mi-o asum până la capăt, faptul că n-am mers mai departe de verificarea softului respectiv [then how do you explain Mr. Stan your failure to engage and tell me this when I reached out to you?; that you think the problem here is your anti-plagiarism software just shows that you continue to not understand what plagiarism is or the gravity of what you did to the person you plagiarized from] . Senzația mea, întărită acum de acest episod, este că algoritmii anti-plagiat lucrează cu anumite procente de recurență și că, în acest caz, și strict la nivel formal, softul nu a găsit nimic. Repet, am explicat cum s-a produs acest incident și-mi reproșez exclusiv neglijența și lejeritatea abordării. Faptul că în interviu NU mi-au fost solicitate note de subsol, bibliografie sau orice alte trimiteri, nu este nicidecum o scuză, ci doar o circumstanță atenuantă. Interviul este o altă specie decât un articol științific (db pr), lucru pe care cred că-l știe și „procurorul” [you plagiarized two full paragraphs almost identically Marius, no matter how you try to minimize it…i.e. it was an interview, nobody asked me for your sources, all efforts to elude responsibility ]. Nu mă scuz, doar explic. Pentru cine vrea să înțeleagă. Evident, Dl. Tufiș poate sta liniștit, subiectul a fost dezbătut în detaliu, în luna decembrie, atât cu editorul New Eastern Europe, cât și cu persoana care mi-a luat interviul. Mărturisesc aici nu doar că le-am furnizat dovezi cum că anumite expresii au fost folosite de alții înaintea lui Richard Hall (de pildă, ideea că rezistența anticomunistă în România a părut o aventură donchișotească—termenul incriminat pentru plagiat de Hall este “quixotic”—apare într-un articol publicat de Tismăneanu, “Personal Power and Political Crisis in Romania,” nu în urmă cu 20 de ani, precum articolul lui Hall, ci într-un număr din 1989 al revistei Government and Opposition, la pag. 190) [nice attempt to cover yourself, but you don’t explain why almost right next to quixotic are the words suicidal and fringe…what were they in Tismaneanu’s article too like that? I don’t think so…you realize well here you have been caught plagiarizing when you go trying to defend yourself this way], dar le-am solicitat să retragă interviul dacă ei consideră că am plagiat [I stated to the Editor in Chief that I was not asking for the article to be removed, just that I wanted the plagiarism acknowledged, so don’t try to make yourself a hero here]. Nici vorbă, mi-au răspuns, acesta rămâne în picioare! Desigur, Richard Hall, despre care voi spune mai departe cine este, nu s-a mulțumit cu a-și exprima liber opinia și a lăsa cititorii NEE să decidă fiecare pentru el despre ce este vorba; el a început o campanie furibundă de contactare a tuturor instituțiilor și persoanelor care ar avea legătură cu mine și m-a forțat practic să reiau această poveste în zone care n-au nicio legătură cu interviul respectiv [and I was also very clear to them, Marius, that I didn’t want you to suffer as a result of my reaching out to them, just that I wanted acknowledgement of the plagiarism and that you not plagiarize me or anyone else ever again; and let me emphasize this is completely at variance with your patron Tismaneanu, who did his best to get me in the maximum amount of trouble he could in 2007, see https://romanianrevolutionofdecember1989.wordpress.com/tismaneanu-report-2006-v-cia-nid-28-12-1989/]. Tot el a forțat mâna editorului NEE cu addende succesive care să-i „facă dreptate”, deși, în virtutea dreptului la liberă exprimare, RH s-a dedat la tot felul de epitete ornante și character assassination. Înainte de a spune mai multe despre R. Hall, îl asigur aici, prin cozile de topor din România care îl reprezintă, că regret neglijența folosirii unor surse incerte și că are scuzele mele sincere pentru eventuala insomnie provocată [wow, that is really touching, Marius, sounds really sincere, you apologize for causing me any insomnia I may have had…funny this is the first I have heard anything from you at all; until now your only indirect communication was to say gloatingly that you ran the passages through your anti-plagiarism software and it was 100 per cent clean…to which you added “TOO BAD!”…yes Marius, your apology here is really sincere]. Îi respect doar dreptul la opinie, ca principiu general [no you don’t, you plagiarized me]. Consider că a fost vorba de o eroare de interpretare și neglijență crasă [of course, wonderful repetitive self-justification, maybe if you repeat it over and over the readers will believe it and you may end up being able to believe it!], în cel mai rău caz, nu de plagiat calificat, așa cum dorește să acrediteze ideea. Faptul că Adam Reichardt, editor-in-chief New Eastern Europe, nu a dorit să audă despre retragerea interviului [as I said above, I explicitly told him neither did I request that] , ba chiar l-a făcut feature article în materialul video de prezentare a platformei la gala .eu Web Award organizată în decembrie anul trecut la Pisa, vorbește de la sine despre calitatea interviului. Înainte de a închide și cu acest punct al intervenției mele, le las procurorilor online răspunsul autoarei proiectului găzduit de NEE, Simona Merkinaite: “We all realised (including the editor[really, Simona, are you sure about that; I reached out to the editor to verify your claims here]) that this seems more personal, rather than ‘academic.’ Seriously, who would be so outrage about a conversation, that in part raises some of the points, that outline the state of affairs, and he is making some exclusive ownership of truth [ownership of the truth???this is about ownership of the work, Simona…you have obviously never been plagiarized before] which is why a couple of point in my view express similar ideas as he did in his article. In this case, a lot is decided by the personal character. I do understand Adam, the editor in chief, when a reader is bombarding you with letters in response to the materials you put out, you just have to take it as reader’s opinion and wilfully accept the letters to the editor, etc [really, Simona, what does Adam have to say about this? does he agree with you?]. If it was me making the call, I would simply respond with a polite thank you for your opinion, because once you engage with a bully, there is no end to it. [so to defend yourself, call out someone for blatantly stealing your work and asking for recognition of that is to be a “bully”?…nice] ” Da, domnule Claudiu Tufiș, în pofida neglijenței care a dus la acest „non-incident” (opinia mea și a celor de la NEE [really, what does the Editor in Chief have to say about that Marius?…I know the answer]), Richard Hall este un personaj cu un istoric impresionant al hărțuirilor și acuzelor publice. Nu trebuie să fii un geniu al căutărilor Google pentru a realiza că miza lui Hall este Vladimir Tismăneanu, dar hai, de dragul prietenului meu publicitar care mi-a semnalat rechizitoriul de azi noapte, iată câteva mostre: – octombrie 2007, fostul [oh I am a former analyst as of 2007, Mr. Stan? are you sure of that or are you so lazy that you are merely repeating a monumentally stupid and easily falsifiable lie spread by Tismaneanu’s proxies at the time, Iliesiu and Badin?…Tismaneanu knew it to be false…precisely because he called my employer to threaten that if action were not taken against me, he would go to a higher level!] analist C.I.A.
