“Quiet settles on city where uprising began” (27 December 1989)

“Varton Valentiniu [sic?], a spokesman for the newly formed Civic Committee”:

said most of the officers of the Securitate who had terrorized the city had given up their weapons or fled.  Fifty of the estimated 200 have been captured, 25 have gone over to the army, and an additional 20 have been ‘punished,’ according to Valentiniu, but he did not explain what that meant.  Also captured in the past few days were three or four of the estimated 200 to 300 of Ceausescu’s special commandos who fought alongside the Securitate.”
